The breadth and depth of INSEAD’s research is internationally acclaimed through prestigious awards. It also inspires donors who are passionate about advancing knowledge to invest in the school. Alumni and friends supported both broad research that expands the boundaries of knowledge on entire economic regions as well as applied research that answers specific issues.

The Global Private Equity Initiative

“The Global Private Equity Initiative (GPEI) was privileged to expand its group of donors during the last academic year. We are especially proud to have the support of many alumni who have committed not only their money but also their time and network to help extend GPEI’s reach and impact.”

In memory of a great professor

Great teachers live in the minds of those whose lives they have touched and transformed. Patrick Turner MBA’78, Professor of Entrepreneurship, was highly regarded for his impact in the classroom as well as his guidance and personal involvement in the innumerable ventures that he helped to initiate. His passing on 12 September 2014 was an immense loss to the school and many former students expressed a desire to honour his memory through a lasting legacy.

The Patrick Turner MBA’78 Prize for the INSEAD Venture Competition was created and endowed in the course of the year, thanks to an outpouring of support from alumni, students and friends. As we go to press, nearly 400 individuals have contributed to raise €284,000 in cash.

Additional pledges, when fulfilled, will take the total higher. Every gift will perpetuate Patrick’s memory and encourage excellence and innovation through the Venture Competition.

Donors who advanced excellence through the Dean’s Annual Fund and the endowment

Since it was established three years ago, the Dean’s Annual Fund has been garnering strong support from alumni and friends. We are delighted to report that in 2014/2015, gifts to the Dean’s Annual Fund increased by 28% from the previous year.

These unrestricted gifts in current funds constitute a highly valuable resource, allowing INSEAD to develop projects in strategic areas that advance our school’s excellence and reputation.

In 2014/2015, your support made the following accomplishments possible: The Career Development Centre launched a new distance learning service that includes an online bank of career management resources, video interviews and access to hundreds of job postings. Major progress was made in revamping our institutional website, which will be launched in 2016.

In the MBA department, resources were allocated to facilitate a curriculum review and a marketing survey. We also invested in alumni outreach activities, including the Salamander alumni magazine.
On behalf of the Dean and the school, we thank you for your investment and trust.

Unrestricted gifts to the endowment

Aware that INSEAD’s endowment constitutes our financial foundation for future progress, an increasing number of donors, particularly the younger alumni, are directing their gifts to the endowment, and leaving the school the freedom to decide on their use.

In the last two years, the number of donors who made unrestricted gifts to INSEAD’s endowment has more than doubled.

From 65 donors in 2013/2014, the number rose to 168 in 2014/2015. The total in gifts and pledges in 2014/2015 came to €458,865. With the new leadership gifts in the present year, the amount has now surpassed €1 million.

Legacy commitments

INSEAD is privileged to have donors who include the school in their bequests. The Georges and Edna Doriot Society honours donors of these special gifts and we thank them for their foresight and generosity.
By including INSEAD in your estate plans, you can leave a personal legacy that will help the school long into the future.

“How wonderful that my bequest will qualify to be a part of the Georges and Edna Doriot Society. I could not be more pleased with this humbling yet wonderful continued association.”

“Prior to coming to INSEAD, I spent several years helping to promote entrepreneurship education in Eastern Europe and beyond. For me, stimulating innovation and job creation is very important and I intend to continue supporting young entrepreneurs in the future. My choice of INSEAD was mainly determined by its strong alumni network, which embodies collaboration, values and brotherhood. I look forward to joining this community and to giving back.”

“As a Vietnamese from a humble family background, I have always depended on scholarships for my education and so I know how important they are. Scholarships open up a whole new world of opportunities. I am really grateful to the Class of MBA’79 for their financial support, which not only helped me to gain access to INSEAD but also doubled my motivation to join the school.”

“My motivation for pursuing an MBA at INSEAD is partly driven by the extensive business travel I have done in Sub-Saharan Africa, seeing first hand the promise that this region bears. There are many opportunities for investing and growing businesses. I can’t think of a better way to express my gratitude than by making the most of my MBA to channel my career towards moving this continent forward.”

“I want to be an entrepreneur, not just any kind, but one committed to building a more socially and environmentally sustainable world. For me, an MBA at INSEAD is not just a degree; it will be a transformative experience. The scholarship I received has substantially helped me to be a part of this amazing experience and to pursue my passion to make this world a better one.”

“My life has made me see how development - or rather the lack of it - can break societies. I wish to enable conflict-torn and fragile economies to rise rather than witness them descend the steps of development. An MBA from INSEAD will give me the necessary skill set to make the transition from international law to working for an organisation that finances developmental projects and thus contribute to societies in need.”

SPARE LETTER
The Global Private Equity Initiative

“The Global Private Equity Initiative (GPEI) was privileged to expand its group of donors during the last academic year. We are especially proud to have the support of many alumni who have committed not only their money but also their time and network to help extend GPEI’s reach and impact. Their generosity has allowed GPEI’s established research team to complete a report on Asian Family Offices, which has been well received, and to develop a series of case studies and white papers for classroom use. GPEI also increased its outreach activities during 2014/2015 to include responsible investing and single family office constituencies. The Initiative is a proud advisor to the recently launched INSEADAlum Venture (IAV) seed fund.

There is much to look forward to in the new academic year. GPEI will publish a report on the drivers of value creation in private equity investment, and launch a new research project exploring the unique partnership opportunity between family businesses and private equity investors. This project aims to provide family businesses with practical insights into the key considerations that govern this type of partnership. We will also welcome the Kauffman Fellows on campus and host our second European Family Office Day in partnership with Invest Europe (formerly EVCA, the European Private Equity & Venture Capital Association) in Geneva.

In line with the mandate set out six years ago, GPEI’s research continues to facilitate the exchange of best practices among private equity limited and general partners and to stimulate conversation among industry stakeholders such as family offices, family businesses and industry bodies. A regular stream of applied content on a range of under-researched topics and geographies, in conjunction with senior industry players, has increased the visibility and recognition of INSEAD in the private equity space. We could not have accomplished so much without the commitment of our donors.”

Poised for a great future

Dear donors,

You are the benefactors who shape our school’s future. Your generosity fuels INSEAD’s progress, and — as the recent Financial Times rankings have confirmed — INSEAD’s progress is forming the world’s best business leaders.

Your support has never been more timely and in a world of accelerating change and competition, an INSEAD education has never been more relevant. We are confronted with challenges that divide people and breed fear of the unknown “other”. INSEAD’s global approach and emphasis on diversity is creating generations of thoughtful business leaders who will embrace the creative potential of diversity and build economic growth leading to higher living standards.

Your collective gifts and pledges in 2014/2015 amounted to €14.2 million — a 28% increase over the previous year. You created nine new scholarships and reinforced 12 more, enabling INSEAD to offer more opportunities for candidates from around the world, especially from Africa, Europe and the Middle East.

Your gifts to research and teaching have helped to ensure INSEAD’s place at the cutting edge of global business education. Your support is advancing knowledge in creativity and business, entrepreneurship, private equity, leadership, corporate governance and family business. For example, the very generous gift from Finn Rausing MBA’81, will spur research on emerging markets, where some of the most exciting developments are occurring today. I am honoured to be the first holder of The Rausing Chair in Economic and Business Transformation.

Your generous contributions to the Dean’s Annual Fund helped the school to undertake a curriculum review, develop a new institutional website and support alumni outreach activities and career development services—strategic areas that are directly linked to our global network and promoting the INSEAD brand.

Thanks to you, INSEAD is poised for a great future. Our values, spirit and academic excellence make us the reference for the best management education in the world. Thank you for your help in allowing us to fulfil our promise.

With gratitude,

Ilian Mihov Dean of INSEAD

Transforming our school

Dear donors,

What an incredible year it has been! Your support in 2014/2015 surpassed last year’s total by 28%, reaching €14.2 million in gifts and pledges. Both major and smaller gifts increased compared to the previous year and there was a strong response to appeals for targeted projects.

This report shows how the collective impact of your gifts is transforming INSEAD’s scholarship offering, research, teaching, facilities and other strategic areas. The individual stories behind these gifts are equally impressive. For example, the Indeed Endowed Scholarship is a story of global teamwork that brought together two alumni from the class of MBA’94D, Rony Kahan in the US, Paul Forster in the UK and their former company Indeed, now based in Japan, to create a €1 million endowed scholarship. The appeal to create the INSEAD Venture Competition Prize in memory of Professor Patrick Turner MBA’78, drew responses from nearly 400 alumni and friends across 48 countries. These are just two examples of our community’s incredible attachment to INSEAD.

Volunteers who helped us with fundraising in many ways – opening doors, hosting meetings, connecting with classmates – also made this year remarkable. My personal and heartfelt thanks to Leonidas Los MBA’75, who as Chairman of the INSEAD Alumni Fund (IAF), is an ardent supporter of the school and a most generous donor. I also thank the IAF directors and trustees, Sadia Khan MBA'95D, President of the INSEAD Alumni Association, National Association presidents, as well as the many volunteers who gave us their precious time, help and expertise. My sincere thanks to the Board of Directors and the Advisory Council for their valuable advice and guidance.

One of the best ways you support the school is by giving to INSEAD annually. To recognise and encourage your annual support, we have launched the Investors’ Circle. We look forward to welcoming you as a member of this distinguished group.

To every donor who made this year one of the best, and to all who are helping us to shape the future of our great school, please accept our community’s heartfelt gratitude.

Joanne Shoveller Associate Dean
Advancement and Alumni Relations

Investing in the future of our school

Dear fellow alumni and friends,

In the course of the last five years as the IAF Chairman, I have been privileged to witness increasing awareness of how alumni investment in INSEAD is essential to sustain our school’s leadership in the 21st century.

Dean Ilian Mihov’s powerful message of our distinctive history, values and mission continues to provide fresh impetus to invest in our school. It is inspiring to see our alumni, whether serving on boards of directors or as new graduates, contributing generously to the school’s excellence.

Our capacity to remain a leader will be driven by the resources available to the school. And we the alumni, its closest stakeholders, will need to give our Dean all the means possible to ensure our future.

I am delighted to highlight that the number of donors who gave in the range of €1,000–€10,000 increased by 9% in 2014/2015, confirming the upward trend in this group over the last few years. It is also heartening to see many young alumni strengthening the Dean’s Annual Fund and the school’s endowment through their unrestricted gifts. To each and every donor, my heartfelt thanks.

My warmest thanks and appreciation also to the Global Directors of the IAF Board and the IAF Trustees for their selfless service to the school. We look forward to working hand-in-hand with the INSEAD Alumni Association and its new President Sadia Khan MBA’95D, to whom we wish every success. Finally, my sincere thanks to Joanne Shoveller, Associate Dean of Advancement and Alumni Relations, and her team for their exemplary service.

The newly created Investors’ Circle, mentioned in Joanne’s letter, seeks to strengthen recognition for annual gifts, which are a fundamental source of investment in our school. I hope many of you will take this opportunity to be part of this group by renewing your gifts every year.

As we continue to build momentum in making INSEAD the most impactful business school in the world, please remember INSEAD in your annual giving and encourage fellow alumni to join the donor community. Your investment will help make a difference and enable the school to go from strength to strength.

Thank you for your continuing support.

With sincere thanks and wishes for good health and fortune for the future to you and your families,

Leonidas T. Los, MBA’75 Chairman

“I remain grateful for my time at INSEAD. Giving is the easiest - and often only – way for me to make that gratitude tangible. Although there are always more urgent needs I know I’m helping to build something that will endure. Consequently, it’s the cheque that’s easiest to sign, every year.”

“Going to INSEAD was a dream come true for me. I was fortunate enough to be a recipient of a scholarship, and for that I am grateful to the school and the donors. That year at INSEAD changes you – it builds in you a sense of confidence and certainty about your skills, talent and network. Giving back is just a natural step; I want to give future scholarship recipients the same experience and opportunities I had.”

“I always think of INSEAD with gratitude. INSEAD helped me to gain a broad overview of the key drivers in the business world and provided me with the self-confidence to take the plunge and start my own enterprise. INSEAD helped lay the foundation for Albin Kistler AG, which is now a highly respected and successful company. It is only natural that I display my gratitude to INSEAD by making a donation to help young, talented INSEAD graduates.”

“Not even a work of fiction could have captured the sparkling array of lifelong friends I acquired in a single year at INSEAD. Two decades later I routinely interact with any number of individuals from my own and adjacent promotions, both socially and for business, not to mention an assortment of other ‘anciens’ all over the world, equally full of unique ideas and enthusiasms. INSEAD was such a pivotal experience for me that it is easy to feel deeply grateful, and very lucky. And to wonder if I have a single ‘Yankee’ friend who would say quite the same thing about another business school experience.”
